GEA to Equip BFF with New Precision‑Fermentation Upscaling Line

GEA has been selected to deliver and commission a full precision‑ and biomass‑fermentation upscaling line for the Biotechnology Fermentation Factory (BFF), an open‑access facility located on the NIZO Food Innovation Campus in Ede, Netherlands. The new installation, scheduled for 2026 with pilot operations targeted for 2027, will provide food‑ and ingredient‑tech innovators with access to a food‑grade environment to validate, test, and scale products such as animal‑free dairy proteins, egg‑white proteins, specialty enzymes, flavors, fragrances and other functional biomolecules.

The pilot line fills a crucial gap in the “missing middle” between lab‑scale development and full commercial production - a stage where many precision‑ and biomass‑fermentation projects currently stall. By offering bookable, shared upscaling capacity, integrated upstream processes, and decision‑grade data, BFF’s model helps teams de‑risk tech transfer and accelerate their path toward industrial readiness. Leaders from both GEA and BFF emphasize that this open‑access approach provides the technical reliability, speed, and food‑grade validation environment needed to move confidently from early proof‑of‑concept to commercial manufacturing.
